Firstly, I am quite new to Publisher. I have played a bit before but now I am into a major family history project, for which I am the lead author, and I am beginning to seek to use the product very seriously. I am finding it a little difficult to express my problem clearly but I hope the reader can follow me, so to say. Firstly I want to use a Word simile.

In Word, one can have lists that are 'numbered' in levels, e. Now to take the 'issue' to Publisher and page numbering. I have found the concepts of Sections and Master Pages, but it would appear, to me, that they are 'indexed' by a single letter, so one can therefore only have a maximum of 26 master pages. It also seems to me that the only place where the page number 'falls' is at the end of whatever sequence of characters one puts before it, so for each master page there can only be one 'literal' before the page number.

I have already created a few different master pages for each of the Publisher sections that I have already. I am wanting to use many different 'literals' in order to create the page numbering structure that I require. For the purpose of further illustration, I will set out, in the following few lines, a contents list of a subset of the pages for Section B in the proposed publication.

The tree of Samuel Johnson - Generations 1 to 3 B. The tree of Samuel Johnson - Generations 4 to 6 B. The tree of Samuel Johnson - Generations 7 to 9 B. The tree of Samuel Johnson - Generations 10 to 13 B. The tree of Patriarch Lawler - Generations 1 to 3 B.

The tree of Patriarch Lawler - Generations 4 to 6 B. The tree of Patriarch Lawler - Generations 7 to 9 B. The tree of Patriarch Lawler - Generations 10 to 13 B. The tree of Patriarch Boddy - Generations 4 to 6 B.

The tree of Patriarch Boddy - Generations 7 to 9 B. The tree of Patriarch Boddy - Generations 10 to 13 B. The first level is the letter for the publication's major section in which the page lies. The second level is the family number for the page The third level is the letter for the generational grouping for the page The fourth level is the sequential page number itself.

Now from what I understand, up to now, I would need to create different master pages to accommodate my requirement for Section B, of the work, alone, let alone what I need for sections A, C, and D. It has struck me that maybe I can give each of the three levels a user-defined field, e.

I apologise for the possibly mildly confusing way I have put this. I know that in Word I could just create hundreds of sections, and give each section a different footer, but from what I have seen in Publisher, up to now, the page numbering aspect, of a section, is driven by Master Pages, and it seems to me I am allowed a maximum of 26 of those. I would welcome any feedback, please. With thanks in anticipation Philip,.

In general it is the better choice for large 'book' projects such as this. Publisher offers only basic word processing functionality, no TOC and limited page numbering and formatting.

If you must use Publisher then I would suggest you manually number your pages. Forget the Master Pages and the limited automagic page numbering and insert a text box on each page of your main publication with the complicated 'structured' page number system you desire. I would also remind you to back up your work often, and back up your backups. Large Publisher files tend to go corrupt.

Never open from or save to removable media as that also tends to corrupt files. Always open files from and save to your local hard drive, and then copy over to USB drives and networks for backup. In general be sure to compress all images in order to keep the file size down. Publisher tends to choke on inserted, large picture files. I would also suggest that you consider breaking up your main Publisher file into multiple smaller files The larger the file size the more likely Publisher will choke and higher the risk of corruption.

Did I mention that Word is better for large documents and books? If you do decide to break up your original file into smaller files, then realize that there is no easy way to combine Publisher files.

Copy and paste is basically it. So plan ahead. This will allow you to combine your Pub files as you convert them to PDF. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. The second level is the family number for the page The third level is the letter for the generational grouping for the page The fourth level is the sequential page number itself Now from what I understand, up to now, I would need to create different master pages to accommodate my requirement for Section B, of the work, alone, let alone what I need for sections A, C, and D.
